This is me
Rachel Huggins is a spirited storyteller and communications strategist with over a decade of experience in the newspaper industry, nonprofit sector, and mental health community, leveraging her expertise to create impactful messaging and creative campaigns.
Before working at the intersection of social science, research, and advocacy, she began her career as a journalist. She spent her days shaping national conversation around pressing issues – ranging from social justice and public safety to congressional and policy analysis – at respected media outlets such as USA TODAY, Vox, The Hill newspaper, and more.
Rachel moved into the nonprofit sector after realizing she wanted to have a bigger impact — helping mission-driven organizations tell meaningful stories and communicate for social good. She has spent the last nine years on communications teams such as the American Institutes for Research (AIR), the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, and Children’s National Hospital, where she has managed multichannel campaigns, developed strategic messaging for national initiatives, and guided thought leadership efforts.
With a “newsroom mentality,” she applies her expertise to enhance brand visibility, connect with key audiences, and achieve measurable results.
Rachel earned her B.A. in journalism from Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she resides.

On-Air Presenter for Documentary: "Mental Health: Effects on Today's Teens"
In this on-air presentation, I discussed the importance of trauma-informed, school-based mental health supports for youth coping with serious mental illness. The focus was on addressing the clinical and cultural aspects of mental health care among today’s teens. This documentary was produced in collaboration with student journalists from Youthcast Media Group (formerly Urban Health Media Project), a USA TODAY-affiliated health literacy initiative based in D.C.

Lead Communications Strategist
I led the development and execution of all communications and promotional materials for a two-year initiative designed to reduce anxiety, depression, and suicide among young people aged 10 to 24 in underserved communities. The initiative also focused on empowering youth to drive meaningful change in their communities. Through strategic multimedia content creation and execution, I successfully raised the profile of the project, ensuring a wider reach and greater impact.
I played a key role in a four-year initiative, supported by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, focused on strategic messaging for primary care associations and behavioral health providers to implement the SBIRT (screening, brief intervention, referral to treatment) toolkit for youth aged 12 to 18.
My work refined evidence-based messaging around substance use prevention and shaped the brand narrative by leveraging research that improved audience segmentation and engagement.
